Hot on the heels of the first competitive analysis study on Singapore online share trading websites, my second posting will be on a related and fiercely competitive industry. Yes, it’s none other than the consumer banking products market! An interesting market space to study. Being a consumer, I’m sure you have always been stopped at train stations by people promoting credit cards, countless times… Our banks are indeed very good at pushing credit cards to you. Either in your face and through your mobile phone. But how do they fare comparatively online?
Consumer banking products are quite varied. Let’s just take a quick look at four main products that enjoy the highest search volumes and Click-Thru-Rates CTR on Google. We will first look at credit cards in part 1 of this article.
The table below lists the Google organic search result position for the four important search terms.
| search term | credit card | personal loan | car loan | home loan |
| Citibank | 3 | - | - | 7 |
| HSBC | 4 | 4 | - | 6 |
| Standard Chartered | 8 | 2 | - | 3 |
| OCBC | 9 | 6 | 6 | 16 |
| DBS | 10 | 9 | 17 | 4 |
| UOB | 12 | 1 | - | 1 |
| Maybank | - | 19 | 4 | 13 |
“Credit card” is a very hot search term. If you run a PPC campaign for credit card, a top position on Google will cost you about $15 per click and can generate more than a thousand clicks per day. Therefore you are actually saving a lot of money if you have a good organic search result position.
Citibank and HSBC have done well taking the 3rd and 4th spots.
While Standard Chartered, OCBC, and DBS have taken the 8th, 9th, and 10th spots.
